Luke 24:44–49 – This is a command. It is not an option.
The Explanation
John 14:15–17; John 15:26; John 16:7–11.
The Spirit is necessary, and not a convenience. These things will come through a Spirit-baptized church.
Misinformation Concerning Pentecost
“On that occasion [Pentecost], the followers of Jesus were enabled to speak with other tongues (known languages) to preach the gospel to Jews from all over the known world who’d come to Jerusalem for Pentecost.”
“On the day of Pentecost the gift of tongues was given to serve a practical evangelistic purpose. The apostles did not know all the languages that were rep resented in the multitude that day in Jerusalem. Thus, by bestowing this gift, God was supplying a need. And from this time onward, wherever the apostles went, they had this facility for foreign languages. Languages they could not have learned in a lifetime of study were immediately available to them as a result of this gift.”
This statements are false, meaning untrue.
#1 Pentecost
Acts 2:1–13.
v. 6 – because every man heard them speak in his own language
Luke is specific. He does not write that the 120 spoke in known languages. The hearing was supernatural. The 120 spoke in tongues and the hearers heard the tongues in their native language.
Astonishment: the astonishment came from one hearer hearing his native language standing next to another who was hearing his native language.
One hears Hebrew and another hears Italian and another hears . . . .That’s why they asked, “Who are these people?”
1 Cor 14:22 – tongues are a sign to the unbeliever
Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy: Isa 28:11–12; 1 Cor 14:21
1 Cor 14:2 – For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men; but unto God. For no man understands him; howbeit in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Cor 14:14 – For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful
#2 Samaritans – Reasonable Inference
Acts 8:14–21 – Simon wasn’t trying to buy the Holy Spirit, but the authority to dispense the baptism.
Acts 8:21 – You have no part or share in this (λογω) – communication
Peter’s statement can be taken to mean: You have no part or share in this spiritual utterance. So when Peter said, “Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter,” he was saying, “Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter of supernatural utterance—this matter of speaking in other tongues.”
Some say it was “joy” but Acts 8:4–8. Philip had preached Christ and there was much joy in the city. The people were already born again. They were going to be baptized in the Spirit in the same way as those at Pentecost. See John 20:22 – he blew on them, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
#3 Saul of Tarsus – Inference
Acts 9:4–6 – Saul was born again on the road to Damascus. He called Jesus, “Lord.” See Romans 10:9
Acts 9:10–12, 17–18 – Jesus appeared to Ananias and told him to lay his hands on Saul.
Acts 9:17 – be filled with the Holy Ghost
This passage doesn’t mention speaking with tongues. But 1 Cor 14:18 – “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.”
#4 Cornelius – The Gentiles
Ten years after Pentecost, the household of Cornelius, a devout Roman centurion, was saved and filled with the Spirit.
Acts 10:44–48 –Peter and his Jewish brothers knew that they had received the baptism “for” they heard them speak in tongues.
#5 Disciples at Ephesus
This occurred approximately twenty years after Pentecost.
Acts 19:1–6
John had baptized in water, teaching those to believe on the “Coming One.” They spoke with tongues the moment they were baptized. Tongues is in the initial evidence.
Conclusion
The baptism of the Spirit includes the evidence of tongues. The baptism was not an option in the Lord’s eyes.
Acts 1:1–5 – “he ordered them”
If you decide not to speak in tongues, be prepared to answer to the resurrected Lord.
