Church as Corporation

Platform ministry is completely unscriptural.
— Stovall Weems

In October 2017, we boarded an American Airlines flight to the coast of Florida—Jacksonville—to interview a pastor with the distinct name of Stovall Weems. Weems had presided over a Good Friday service months before and experienced an extraordinary vision about the Lord’s Supper and Jesus’ present-day ministry. We wanted to hear about this out-of-body experience first hand. We included our interview with him in Breath 2, which was published this past June.

We’ve kept our eyes on Weems and the aftermath stemming from his encounter with the Lord. And it has been fascinating to watch. He still pastors his 14,000-member megachurch, but the vision has completely upended his past ambitions. In these video podcasts, entitled Hierarchy & Authority, he grapples with the fact that the corporate type of ministry that propelled him into national prominence isn’t actually grounded in scripture. These videos are refreshing sips of cool water for those of us who have long endured the barren land of modern “ministry.”

Update:

The video linked below where Weems says platform ministry is unscriptural is no longer available. He has since handed the reins of the church over to another minister.
